HP LaserJet Printers with TPM Modules: Security Features and Replacement Limitations
Updated: Jan 31
HP has integrated Trusted Platform Module (TPM) technology into several of its LaserJet printers to enhance security. The TPM is a security chip that enables secure storage of information, such as passwords and security keys, by automatically sealing device encryption keys to the TPM, providing robust protection against unauthorized access.

In certain HP LaserJet models, the TPM is embedded within the formatter board—the component responsible for processing print jobs and managing communication between the printer and connected devices.
Due to the security functions tied to the TPM, replacing a formatter board with a refurbished unit is inadvisable and in most cases not possible.
The following HP LaserJet printers come with a TPM as standard equipment, and their formatter boards should not be replaced with refurbished units:
M406 M407
M430 M431
M455 M480
M507
M528
M578
M610/M611/M612
M634/M635/M636
M751
M776
M856
It's important to note that using a refurbished formatter board in these models can result in the printer failing to recognize the TPM, leading to errors or compromised security features. For instance, users have reported issues such as the printer not booting up or losing functionality after installing a used formatter board.
